The Sands of Time

Though records of the Club's earliest days are sparse, we do know that it was founded in August 1874 by the Hon'ble Sir Louis Jackson, a civilian judge of the Calcutta High Court, at a now-unknown location on Theatre Road. It served primarily as a dancing hall for the British citizenry at its inception, though over the years the Club would come to be recognised for its unique atmosphere, excellent food, and vibrant sporting life.

The Club moved into its current premises at No. 7 Wood Street in 1900, when the lessee, John Carapiet Galstaun, assigned the lease to the Saturday Club for five rupees. For more than a century, the Saturday Club has stood on the same ground at the heart of Kolkata, a living record of the city's history, social life, and sports culture.
